Rare but Significant · Credibility Tests · Preparation Changes Outcomes

Partner visa interviews are rare but significant.

For interview coaching Neha Sharma runs mock interviews with couples on the 820 and 309 pathways. If you are called for one, the case officer has flagged something in your file they want to test directly. The way you handle the interview usually determines the outcome. Here is what to expect, how the Department assesses credibility, and how we prepare clients.

When interviews happen

Four scenarios trigger interviews.

Interviews are not random. The Department has concerns it wants to resolve.

Evidence gaps or inconsistencies

Where written evidence is thin or inconsistent, the Department may use an interview to probe.

De facto cohabitation concerns

Where cohabitation evidence is borderline or the 12-month timeline is close. See de facto evidence guide.

Significant prior immigration history

Where the applicant or sponsor has prior refusals, cancellations, or immigration issues.

Department flags or referrals

Some applications are flagged by Department systems or referred from other agencies. Interviews follow.

Common interview questions

What the Department actually asks.

Questions typically fall into four categories probing specific aspects of the relationship.

How you metWhen, where, who introduced you, what was happening at that time. Dates and specifics expected.
Daily life togetherMorning routines, meal preparation, household responsibilities, weekends, what TV shows you watch together. Tests shared domestic life.
Knowledge of each otherFamily members' names, birthdays, workplaces, medical history, preferences. Probes whether you know each other at a depth consistent with a genuine relationship.
Future plansWhere you plan to live, career plans, children, property intentions. Tests whether the relationship has forward intent.
How to prepare

Three preparation principles.

Interview preparation is not memorisation. It is organisation of true information.

Review your application

Re-read every document you submitted. The interviewer has read them. Inconsistencies with interview answers create credibility concerns.

Answer truthfully and specifically

Vague answers invite follow-up. Specific, dated, named answers are credible. If you do not know something, say so honestly.

Mock interview practice

We run mock interviews with clients when interviews are scheduled. Practice reveals weak spots and builds confidence.

The single most damaging interview pattern is inconsistency between the applicant and sponsor.

The Department interviews applicant and sponsor separately and compares answers. Large inconsistencies (different versions of how you met, different descriptions of daily life, different future plans) suggest the relationship may not be genuine. Preparing together beforehand is essential.

Common questions

The questions we hear most.

For partner visa interview preparation, book with Neha Sharma.

Can my agent attend the interview with me?
Yes. Registered migration agents can attend partner visa interviews. Agents do not speak on your behalf but can observe and take notes.
What happens if I forget a date or detail?
Say so honestly. Guessing or making up answers is worse than admitting you do not remember. Inconsistencies hurt more than gaps.
Do both applicant and sponsor get interviewed?
Usually yes. Separate interviews with the same questions allow the Department to compare consistency.
How long does a partner visa interview take?
Typically 60-90 minutes per person, but can extend longer for complex cases.
