BIIP Closed 2024-2025 · Global Talent · Legacy Pathways

Australia's business migration system went through significant changes.

The Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) closed to new applications in 2024-2025. The pathways that remain, including the Global Talent visa and some legacy provisions, are narrower but still available for specific profiles.

Current business pathways

Three main options in 2026.

Post-BIIP, business migration is concentrated in a small number of pathways.

Global Talent Visa (858)

The primary current pathway for business founders, senior executives, and exceptional talent. See Global Talent guide.

Legacy 188/888 transitions

Existing 188 holders transitioning to 888 permanent visa. New 188 applications are not accepted.

Employer sponsored pathways

Senior executives may qualify for 186 Direct Entry. See SID Specialist Skills for high-earning roles.

State and territory nomination

Some states retain business-adjacent nomination programs. Highly variable.

Global Talent as primary business pathway

Most business applicants now pursue Global Talent.

For founders of successful businesses and senior executives in priority sectors, Global Talent is the strongest current option.

Priority sectorsAI, quantum, FinTech, energy, health, defence, infrastructure. See full list in Global Talent guide.
Income thresholdTypically at or above AUD $175,000. Business founders can often meet this through documented earnings.
International recognitionThe key test for business founders: demonstrable international standing in the field.
Nomination requiredAustralian citizen, PR, or eligible organisation with national reputation in the field must nominate.
Legacy 188/888 holders

Transition pathway to permanent residency.

If you already hold a Subclass 188 provisional, the 888 permanent pathway remains open.

188 provisional holders

Existing 188 visa holders continue to permanent residence through the 888. Ongoing business operation requirements apply.

888 permanent residence

Business ownership, turnover, asset, or investment thresholds must be maintained for the qualifying period.

No new 188 applications

New 188 applications are closed. Business applicants should consider Global Talent or employer sponsorship.

BIIP closure reshaped business migration overnight.

Some business applicants still think of the 188/132 as available. They are not. Current strategy focuses on Global Talent or employer sponsorship depending on the applicant profile.

Common questions

The questions we hear most.

For business migration strategy, book with Sourabh Aggarwal.

Is the 132 Business Talent still available?
No. The 132 closed permanently as part of the BIIP reforms.
Can my existing 188 still progress to 888?
Yes. 188 holders continue to the 888 pathway. The transition framework remains in place for existing cohort.
I am a business founder. Which pathway fits?
Usually Global Talent if the business has international recognition and meets income thresholds. Otherwise employer sponsorship through a related Australian entity.
What about state-nominated business visas?
Highly variable. Some states have business-adjacent nominations within the 190 and 491 frameworks. Check current state programs.
