Some substantive visas allow travel but processing a new application removes the facility. BVB restores it.

If the BVB lapses, you need a fresh BVB for subsequent trips. Multiple BVBs across pending applications possible.

BVB must be granted before you board an international flight. Not obtainable offshore.

Substantial reasons for travelBVB requires substantial reasons for travel. Family emergencies, business commitments, important events. Holiday-only travel can be approved but usually needs some articulated reason.
Specific travel datesBVB is tied to specific intended travel period. Sometimes granted for longer but generally matches the request.
Application pending in good orderThe underlying visa application must still be pending. Concerns about the application can affect BVB.
BVB duration

Short trips
3-month BVB common for brief travel. Short visits home, business trips.
Extended travel
Up to 12 months BVB possible for longer absences. Evidence required.
Multiple entries
BVB usually allows multiple entries within the granted period. Confirm with individual grant.
BVB is not automatic; it must be applied for.
Many BVA holders discover too late that they need a separate BVB application before departure. Book BVB applications at least 2-4 weeks before planned travel. Emergency BVB applications are possible but rushed applications risk refusal.

How long does BVB take to process?
2-6 weeks typical. Urgent BVB applications can be processed faster with compelling reasons.
Can I apply BVB from outside Australia?
No. BVB must be applied for and granted while onshore. Apply before leaving.
What if my BVB expires while I am overseas?
You lose the ability to re-enter. Options become complex and urgent. Monitor BVB expiry carefully during travel.
Does work continue on BVB?
Work rights on BVB usually match the underlying BVA. Check specific grant.
